The Small System That Fixed My Diet

TL;DR

It’s 9 PM.

You’re hungry.

You open the fridge… nothing.

You pull out your phone and order an overpriced, reheated meal from Zomato or Swiggy that somehow still takes 30–40 minutes to arrive.

What if I told you that you could reheat a home-cooked meal in about 6 minutes instead?

I’ve been doing exactly that for the last four weeks, and it has completely changed how I think about food. As a bonus, I also lost 2.5 kg without sacrificing muscle.

Context

Recently I started living alone. One of the first things I bought was a proper fridge and a microwave.

Food is one of the most important things in our lives, yet we somehow make it unnecessarily complicated. I definitely did. I used to snack every 30 minutes, order food whenever I felt hungry, and convince myself I’d cook tomorrow.

Being a working professional, I like optimizing things. Spending more than an hour every single day cooking and washing utensils just didn’t make sense to me.

I had known about meal prep for a long time, but I always had an excuse.

“I don’t have a microwave.”

“Fresh food is always better.”

“I’ll start next week.”

One of my close friends (also a gym bro) kept telling me to give it a shot. Eventually I ran out of excuses and decided to try it.

Learning before cooking

Meal prep isn’t really about cooking.

It’s about preserving food properly.

Before making my first batch, I spent a few evenings watching YouTube videos, reading about food storage, and asking ChatGPT way too many questions.

A couple of things I learned:

Indians usually prefer freshly cooked food, so freezing meals is often frowned upon. (My mom definitely wasn’t impressed when I told her I was freezing cooked rice 😂.)

Let the cooking begin

Since I wanted protein-heavy meals, the formula was surprisingly simple.

That’s it.

Being someone who likes something sweet after dinner, I also made overnight oats or yogurt bowls for dessert.

For my very first meal prep, I had to order a bunch of things:

Blinkit to the rescue.

Cooking itself wasn’t difficult.

I already knew how to cook chicken, rice, and vegetables.

The challenging part was figuring out portion sizes and making sure the food stayed moist enough to survive freezing and reheating without turning into cardboard.

Packed food

Then came the part nobody talks about.

Washing everything.

Future me was about to have a great week.

Present me had to wash every single pan in the kitchen.

Into the freezer

I made six servings.

One for immediate consumption.

Two went into the fridge.

Three went into the freezer.

I also made three chocolate overnight oats for the week because I refuse to end dinner without something sweet.

Heat. Eat. Repeat.

This quickly became my favourite part of the day.

I come home after work, usually after a workout and a couple of evening meetings.

Instead of wondering what to eat, I open the fridge, grab a container, and throw it into the microwave.

Three minutes.

Stir.

Another three minutes.

While the microwave spins and my stomach growls, I patiently wait for dinner.

Devours food… burp.

Now comes dessert.

Cold chocolate oats straight from the fridge.

The overnight texture is honestly better than I expected.

What I learned

I’ve meal prepped every week for the last four weeks, and here are a few things I’ve learned:

Meal prep has made hitting my protein goals ridiculously easy.

It has also reduced the number of times I open Zomato “just to see what’s available.”

The biggest surprise wasn’t the weight loss.

It was how much mental energy I saved by removing one decision from every single day.

Sometimes the best systems are the boring ones.
